I was reading an online article provided by Newsweek magazine on Mike Huckabee, our former Governor here in Arkansas. It SEEMED unbiased for the most part, however it was the reader comments that swung wildly from political tree to tree. Claiming affiliation to a particular political party in our country is akin to preferring Chevy’s over Fords, football over baseball, Islam over Christianity. You’re just not going to convince the other that yours is the better way.
I like Mike, as a politically uncommitted former constituent of his, I think he did a good job. He was a stranger in a strange land, that is, him being a Republican in Arkansas politics dominated by Democrats. (Our current Governor is a Democrat and I’m satisfied for now that he is doing a good job especially by repealing a portion of our stupid-ass grocery tax the day he entered office). Huckabee’s record on taxation and acceptance of gifts while Governor is over blown, I admire his commitment to his faith, and I agree with his position on making scholar ships and higher education available to children of immigrant children whether they are here legally or not. What does that have to do with being soft on immigration? We gain nothing in this country if we repress their desire to learn and refuse them access to an education (insert Lou Dobbs ranting here if you wish). As Mike has stated, how can we hold those kids accountable for the decision making of their parents? His decision to become involved in the parole of Wayne Dumond was a fuck up and should have never been done. His temper behind closed doors is an issue for some, but is it better to hold the office of the President of the United States with out a bit of a temper. Most of America probably forgot or didn’t know that he lived in a “doublewide” parked on the grounds of the Governors Mansion for a while, while renovations were being completed, a move that surely gave all the white trash and rednecks in the state a bit of commonality with our states highest elected public servant.
As for President Huckabee, I don’t believe he’s ready or qualified to take on the presidency but I don’t think there’s one single candidate (Democrat or Republican) that’s fit for the job either. For Mike, his best bet is to put forward a good campaign in 2008, run the race, use the experience, lose, spend time over the next 4 years familiarizing himself with foreign and domestic relations, then have another go at it 2012. I’m sure we’ll have a bunch of reasons to elect a new leader by then like we do now and have with every presidential election.
I say no ONE person is qualified because the way we choose one leader to run a country as diverse as our is grossly outdated. When our founding fathers established our Constitution and our system of electing a leader, they were united under one cause, to end repressive rule and taxation. Our country was small and political beliefs were a little more united. We didn’t cloudy up the waters with abortion, illegal immigration, global warming, Muslims, communists, Cubans, earthquakes, tsunamis, baseball scandals, etc. They had a single cause in which to fight: Independence. They won and they created the greatest democracy in the world. The one President elected was a war hero elected mostly as a symbolic gesture coming on the heels of the euphoria that would come after independence. For the most part, It was a GROUP of guys from both sides of the isle (if there was an isle) working together to get the job done.
These days there are too many diverse issues in this country that can be entrusted to the decision making of one person. We should take the presidency out of the hands of one and take a lead from some of our most successful corporations in America and put it instead in the hands of a bi-partisan committee of 5 elected leaders from the newly created 5 presidential districts of the US each serving a 4 year term. A board of directors so to speak whose final decision will be simple majority with no abstentions allowed. Our Legislative and Judicial branches will still function as they have checking and balancing our government but when a presidential decision is needed, let’s “go to the board”.
I believe in the power of our electoral process. I feel it is every American’s obligation to vote. Too many men and women have lost their lives giving us the right of self determination. Recent elections have shown us the importance of our one vote. Far too many Americans don’t vote because they don’t know what it’s like to not be able to vote, they are dismayed at the actions of politicians or they are simply too stupid to understand even the simplest issues and in that case, they probably shouldn’t be voting. It’s because of that last group I refuse to run for any public office. The guy that’s out poaching deer, driving drunk, abusing children or operating a meth lab are also the same ones that tend to rally behind the like minded candidate at the right time and determine whether I have a job or not. Too lazy and too busy are no longer valid excuses as our voting process allows us to vote early and absentee.
I’m tired of George Bush, I voted for him twice and given the circumstance put before us after 9/11 I feel he was the right guy for the time. Once Iraq entered his sights and Afghanistan was no longer a priority, he over extended himself and our country. And his unwavering commitment to “win” in the Middle East has cost us much more that we can ever repay. Our Presidents meddling in the region to put his idea of fair and just government on people who don’t understand it, want it or even deserve it is a futile fight that will never be won. The reality of freedom for all is a nice concept but it is my belief the people of Arab lands needs a Dictator. They understand nothing but strong arm rule and I equate them to being the children of the abusive dad who uses more force and fright than normal but manages to keep everybody in line. As shitty a guy as Saddam was, he did just that. Once we took him out of the equation, set up a little “freedom” we’ve seen the results in that all sorts of unruly factions have popped up and they’re showing us just what happens when you give a bunch of lunatics the freedom to roam unabated.
